The creature type is so powerful and popular that a lot of good cards are more highly valued than they would be if they were salamanders or sharks, but I cant argue with a mana dork that gives your angels +1/+1 counters as they enter

I remember feverishly looking at them on Scryfall, desperate to get my hands on one

Spreading around +1/+1 counters gives you a fantastic buff, even if you lose the enchantment, and doubling those counters only makes your defenders more formidable
