It was a subspecies of a little known American canine that once ranged over the southeastern United States from Central Texas to Southern Illinois. The Texas red wolf is today, for all practical purposes, extinct in the wild. The increase in human population, land use changes, and predator control, all contributed to the demise of the red wolf.
